Create your own Halloween candy
October 30, 2009
Bored with traditional Halloween candies? Make your own unique sweet treats to tempt trick-or-treaters and wow party-goers.
Pick up a few bags of melting chocolate, which can be found in most supermarkets or craft stores. Purchase a variety of colors - you'll find that green, orange, white and traditional milk chocolate will work well for the holiday. Some stores even offer peanut butter or mint-flavored melting chocolate.
Find a few candy molding trays with Halloween shapes, too. If you have traditional cookie cutters with a Halloween theme they could also work to achieve the basic silhouette of your candies, which you can decorate and top with sprinkles.
Heat the chocolate chips up in a double boiler or in the microwave and poor into molds. One way to create delicous and pretty candies is to pour in a first layer, allow the chocolate to cool, and poor in another layer in a contrasting color. For Halloween, alternate orange-colored chocolate with traditional dark chocolate.
While chocolate is cooling, throw in a few extra treats for flavor and texture. Crushed-up sandwich cookies, sprinkles and toffee are delicious additions.
