Host a "Yankee swap" party this holiday season
December 02, 2009
If you're searching for an economical way to host a festive Christmas party, look no further than a Yankee swap party.
This fun and sometimes treacherous gift-giving game allows for everyone to walk away with something. When sending out your party invitations, suggest a theme for the gifts such as food and beverages or movie-related gifts.
Also make sure to include a price range. The game is the most fun when gifts are similar. If one person brings an iPod and everyone else wraps up candles and chocolate, no one will be happy.
The activity works like this everyone brings one gift to the party, and it must be completely wrapped. Then, partygoers must pick a number out of a hat to determine their turn. The highest number goes first, and turns work backwards towards number one.
During their turn, each player can choose one gift to unwrap. Players can choose to keep the gift they have or swap it for one that a previous player chose. One variation of the game dictates that players cannot unwrap gifts - they must choose and swap based on the shape of the wrapped presents.
One of the best parts of hosting a Yankee swap is that hosts don't need to provide party favors!
