Give your birthday a boost with a disco theme
November 09, 2010
Your birthday is coming up and you're looking to throw a big shindig this year, but you can't think of an amazing theme. Well, it's time to strap on some platform shoes and bell-bottom jeans because you'll be boogieing all night long as your disco-themed blowout!
The best part about theme parties is that you can dress in fun and crazy costumes for an evening and you're not looked at weird! Of course, theme parties only work when everyone gets in on the fun, so be sure to tell your friends to wear their best disco outfits when you send out the party invitations.
As you're preparing for the big party, you should have a checklist of everything you'll need to make it a true disco party. Think about everything associated with that period, the music, clothing, art, culture. There are plenty of sources of inspiration for you to use when organizing an amazing disco birthday.
When thinking about decorations, try thinking of Studio 54. What you need is a large mirrored disco ball to really get the party started, so that should be the first item you seek when picking up party supplies. If possible, instead of purchasing tons of expensive machines and strobe lights, look into renting the equipment for the evening. It will help you save money and enhance the atmosphere. Also, try placing metallic fringe and beaded door curtains to give the venue a more groovy feel.
If you have the space, hang a large banner along a wall that is visible once your guests enter welcoming them to your very own discotheque! The banner can be in an array of groovy colors and even feature a personalized phrase or message.
Music will also play a huge role in making this a true disco party. Whether you're listening to ABBA or the Village People, make sure to have plenty of disco tunes in the rotation to keep the party going all night long. You may even get everyone to break out and do the YMCA or the Hustle! Pass out great party favors such as whistles or noisemakers that your partygoers can use to be more interactive with the music.
If you decide to serve food at your party, do your guests a favor and have plenty of paper goods such as napkins and paper plates for them. They'll be able to easily eat some great appetizers and finger foods without dropping it on your carpet, sparing you from having to do some heavy cleaning in the morning.
Disco is all about having fun and letting loose, so just go with the flow. When picking out your own outfit for the occasion, don't be afraid to go over-the-top. A fun leisure suit like the ones seen in Saturday Night Fever, or hotpants and an afro are just a few of the endless possibilities one can choose from.
At the end of the evening send your friends home with fun glow party favors like necklaces or little shot glasses. You may even be able to find cool necklaces with mini mirrored disco balls hanging from them. Anything that captures the spirit of disco is perfect.
