How To: Make Christmas Dog Treats

Have you been busy baking cookies for Santa? Take a break from those regular sugar cookies and bake some treats for the fluffiest and cutest members of your family!
Baking dog treats instead of buying them can be a blast! There are also many recipes out there that are much healthier for your dog than the ones found in stores! Plus, you can always trust your home-made treats because you know the exact ingredients needed to bake them!
Here are just a few Christmas dog treat recipes that your pup will drool over!
1) Cheese and Garlic Treats

/>Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
- 1 1/4 c. grated Cheddar cheese
- 1/4 lb. corn oil butter
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- Pinch of salt
Directions:
- Grate the cheese and let stand until it reaches room temperature.
- Cream the cheese with the softened butter, garlic, salt and flour.
- Add enough milk to form into a ball. Chill for 1/2 hour.
- Roll onto floured board.
- Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown and firm.
2) Candy Cane Treats

Ingredients:
Light Dough
- 4 Cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 Cup Cornmeal
- 1 Egg, beaten
- 1/4 Cup peanut butter
- 1 1/2 Cups water
Dark Dough
- 4 Cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 Cup cornmeal
- 1 Egg, beaten
- 1/4 Cup molasses
- 1 Tablespoon oil
- 1 1/2 Cups water
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350F and grease the cookie sheets.
Light Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, add all the dry ingredients and mix well.
- Now add all the wet ingredients.
- Mix the ingredients well. The resulting dough will be nice and firm.
Dark Dough
- In a different mixing bowl, add the dry ingredients for the dark dough.
- Now add all the wet ingredients.
- Mix the ingredients well. The resulting dough will be softer than the light dough.
- Pinch off a small piece of dough about the size of a ping pong ball and roll it out into a small log that is about 1/4? thick and 4 inches long.
- For the dark dough you will need to flour your cutting board.
- On a floured surface, place a light and dark dough log side-by-side and twist together.
- Then gently bend the top of the twisted dough so that it looks like a candy cane.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes.
3) Christmas Mint Cookies

Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 cups bisquick
- 1/2 cup mint chopped leaves
- 1/4 cup milk
- 4 tablespoons margarine
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons corn syrup
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients in food processor, process until well mixed
- Roll out on a floured surface to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut with holiday shaped cookie cutters, place on non-stick cookie pan.
- Bake at 375 F for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Cool and store in air-tight container.
4) Puppy Dog Egg Nog

Ingredients:
- 1 container plain yogurt
- 1 jar baby food (any meat flavor)
- 1 large can evaporated milk
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups water
Directions:
-Blend all ingredients.
- Serve in holiday bowls.
5) Ginger Bread Bones

Ingredients:
- 2 cups of all purpose flour
- 1 cup of whole wheat flour
- ½ cup of molasses
- ½ cup of water
- A quarter cup of canola oil
- 2 tablespoons of ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon of ground cloves
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Mix all the ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl.
- Roll out dough on floured baking board to about 5mm thick.
- Using a dog bone shape cookie cutter to cut as many shapes until the dough is all used up.
- Place cut dough on ungreased foiled baking sheets.
- Bake the cookies for 30 minutes.
- Allow it to cool for at least 2 hours before serving.
