Set sail for adventure at a nautical themed party! If you’ve got a sailing fanatic in your family, make their next birthday extra special by catering to their favorite hobby and planning a party that revolves around a nautical theme. And don’t feel like you’re limited by time or location, you can throw a nautical themed birthday party in the dead of winter and living near the beach is not a requirement! With a few simple ideas and some great nautical party supplies you can ensure your event is a complete success!
Invite your guests to climb aboard the H.M.S. “Party Central” with nautical themed personalized invitations. These invitations come in a variety of themes that are appropriate for casual get-togethers or more upscale events. And since they come preprinted with all your party details, you’ll save time and won’t have to worry about filling out dozens of invitations by hand.
If you’re lucky enough to live by the coast and are planning a summer party, take advantage of your surroundings and have your party on the beach. A seaside nautical party encourages a casual atmosphere, which means you can keep your decorations simple. Some nautical paper goods to serve your food on, a few beach mats for your guests to lounge on, and some red and blue lanterns to add some ambiance to the evening and you can let Mother Nature take care of the rest!
However, if you’re party location is completely land-locked, you’ll need to use a little more imagination to set the scene for your nautical themed event. Start by lining the walls with one of our ocean and blue sky scene setter to transform your room into a seaside oasis. Or, if you’re going for a subtler, more elegant feel for your nautical event, you can go with the traditional blue and white nautical color scheme, with red accents. Cover your tables with white tablecloths, and then layer another, shorter tablecloth in navy blue over the white one. Drape the chairs in white chair covers. For your centerpieces, fill narrow glass vases of varying heights with sand and place white votive candles in them. Group three to five vases in the center of each table and scatter seashells around the bases.
When you’re planning your menu, seafood is the obvious choice for a nautical event! A beach party is the perfect opportunity to have a traditional clambake, complete with corn on the cob, roasted potatoes, lobster, clams, and plenty of cold beverages! For your land locked party, consider a seafood buffet, complete with mini quiches, shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, crab legs, lobster bisque, New England clam chowder, and shrimp scampi. Of course, not everyone enjoys seafood, so having some non-seafood options, like chicken or steak, is always a good idea. A decadent chocolate cake is a tasty complement to the lighter seafood fare as well!
If you’ll be having younger kids at your event, having some activities to keep them occupied is a good idea. Set up a craft area where they can build and decorate their own sailboats out of various materials, like foam, cardboard, cardstock, and plastic cups. Have glitter, markers, buttons, and other items they can use to personalize their boats. Set up a large tub with water where the kids can hold boat races and may the fastest craft win! Just be prepared for a little splashing as races get under way!
Choosing a nautical theme for your event gives you plenty of options for decorating, whether you want to go casual or elegant. And just because your theme is related to the ocean, you are by no means limited to holding your event in the summer or near the water! With the right decorations, you can transform your party space into a yacht club on the beach and transport your guests to the seaside. So get ready to hoist up the anchor and set sail for fun as you plan your next nautical event!
