Get Ready to Hit the Beach with These Tips and Ideas for a Fun-Filled Day in the Sun!
May 21, 2012
Once the dark, dreary days of winter are over and the cold chill of spring is past it’s time to kick off the summer with a beach party! Whether you live on the coast and can have your party right next to the waves or will need to use a little creativity and some fantastic beach party decorations to create a beach atmosphere, you and your friends will have an incredible time ushering in the dog days of summer!
Nothing makes people think of summer than the thought of the sand, sun, and surf, so when your guests open up their personalized beach invitations they’ll immediately be dreaming of a little summer fun! Be sure to include a reminder with their invitation that they’ll need to arrive in their finest beach attire! After all, it’s not a real beach party without bikini tops, Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, and colorful leis!
Once your invitations are out, you can focus on your decorations for your beach party. If you’re lucky enough to be having your beach party on the beach, decorating will be easy as you can let Mother Nature do all the hard work! Just add a few lantern lights to guide the way down to the beach, and maybe an inflatable cooler or two to hold the beverages, and the waves, sand, and setting sun will provide the rest of your party ambiance. However, if you’re holding your beach party indoors, you’ll have a little more work ahead of you to create a beach scene. Start off with some beach scene setters on the walls to bring the outdoors inside. Then, add some silk flower fringe along the stair rails or deck and porch railings. String up some festive floral lanterns for some mood lighting and you’ll be off to a great start! Add in some beach party paper goods to eat your tasty treats off of, and you’ll be ready to go!
Now that you’ve nailed down all the decorations you need for your beach party, it’s time to start planning the menu. With so many great summer foods to choose from, setting up a buffet with lots of tasty treats for your guests to nibble on is a fantastic idea. This works well for an indoor or outdoor party, although if you’re having an outdoor party, you’ll want to keep the dishes covered to keep the bugs away. Investing in a tent for the occasion, where you can have the food sheltered from the sun, sand, and any flying pests that might try to steal your food, is probably a good idea.
Some delicious ideas for your beach party cuisine include fruit salad, shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, corn on the cob, potato or pasta salads, garden salads, and anything that can be thrown on the grill. And of course, you’ll want to be sure your bar is stocked with the fixings for summery drinks like margaritas, pina coladas, Long Island ice tea, and fruit smoothies for the designated drivers.
Since it’s a summer kickoff party, you’ll want to be sure you have plenty of outdoor activities to keep your guests occupied at your party as well! Of course you’ll need to have your limbo game set up. You might be surprised at just how low your friends can go! Volleyball, baseball, water balloons, and Frisbees are always crowd pleasers that will keep you’re your guests amused! If you’re feeling especially ambitious, or will be having a lot of kids at the party, you can plan a scavenger hunt for your guests. Create lists with beach-themed items for guests to find. Have them break into teams and then set out to find the items on the list. Some items might be a starfish, a box of fish sticks, a bag of sand, a picture of a sunset, and a beach ball. The first team to come back with all the items on the list wins! Another twist on the scavenger hunt is to have the teams complete beach-themed tasks, like building a sand castle, getting their feet wet, eating fish, and acting like a mermaid. Have them use their phone cameras to record themselves completing each task.
When you’re ready to say goodbye to the winter blahs and say hello to summer, planning a beach party is a great way to kick off the summer season! Just use your imagination and you and your guests will have a fantastic time, whether you’re on the beach or in your own backyard pretending to squish the sand between your toes!
