Kick-off the 2012 Summer Olympics with an Olympic Themed Opening Ceremony Party!
July 10, 2012
The 2012 Summer Olympics in London are right around the corner and whether they’re sports fans or not, everyone seems to be catching Olympic fever! While it might not be in the budget to fly the whole family to London to watch the opening ceremony unfold live, you can certainly plan a spectacular opening night Olympic party of your own where you and your friends can cheer on the athletes and get ready for weeks of sports and sportsmanship.
Invite everyone to your opening night ceremonies with these great Olympic personalized invitations that come preprinted with all your party info and will give your event that official Olympic feel! Encourage your guests to come dressed in outfits representing their favorite summer Olympic sport, athlete, or country.
You’ll want to set the stage for your Olympic opening ceremony party, so stock up on Olympics party supplies to deck your house out in full Olympic regalia! Whether you want to show your American pride and drape the entire house in red, white, and blue or plan to use a more international theme, there are plenty of decorating options. Cover your walls in stadium scene setters so your guests feel like they are in the midst of the crowd for the opening ceremonies. Dangle international flag whirls from the ceiling so all the countries are represented as their athletes stroll by on the television screen. And of course you’ll need to proudly display the Olympic rings in honor of the event! You can hang them over the buffet table, from the doorway, or in the windows. Choose patriotic paper goods like our stars and stripes plates and coordinating USA napkins. The most important part of your opening ceremony party though, is going to be the ceremony itself, so you’re going to have to make sure you’ve got plenty of room for everyone to watch, and a television that’s big enough so everyone can see. Set up extra seating in front of the television, and if you don’t have a large screen television, you might want to consider renting one for the evening.
You’ll want to have plenty of munchies on hand to keep every full and satisfied during your party, so set up a buffet table that your guests can have easy access to without disturbing everyone’s viewing of the ceremonies. Finger foods are the best choice since chances are they’ll be eating in front of the TV, making it hard to work with utensils. Choose veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, mini quiches, chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and other simple snack foods that are universal crowd pleasers.
To keep things interesting and keep the party moving during commercials, plan Olympic style events in your home or yard for your guests to participate in.
- Set up an obstacle course using game cones and see who can navigate it the fastest using your toddler’s tricycle.
- If you have a pool, stage swim races to see who is the fastest swimmer or best diver.
- Have a mock javelin throw using a pool noodle instead of a real javelin.
- See who remembers their old gymnastics moves and who can perform the best cartwheels, somersaults, and handstands. Best do this before any alcohol has been consumed!
- For the less athletic crowd, create a trivia game with questions based on past Olympic game and current athletes, events, and locations.
And of course, you’ll want to have awards and trophies on hand for the winners of your mock Olympics, so stock up on gold, silver, and bronze medals to hand out to the winners of each category. If you want to go whole hog, set up an awards circle just like they have in the real Olympics, complete with staggered winners’ podiums, flags, and floral crowns to present to each winner.
Planning a fabulous Summer Olympics opening ceremonies party will certainly make you a winner with all your friends, so stock up on the perfect decorations, start cheering for your favorite athletes, and get ready to cheer Team USA to victory this year in London!
