Don't Let it Rain on your Parade! Use These Tips to Carry Out your Party when Summertime Storms Strike
July 20, 2012
You’ve spent weeks planning the perfect summer party. You are expecting dozens of guests, have all the burgers and dogs ready for the barbeque, sent your son or husband out to mow the lawn and make sure the yard is looking picture perfect, and are just getting ready to set out the rest of the food and party supplies when you hear it—the roll of thunder. Even if you’ve been obsessively checking the weather forecast for days and there was no hint of rain, freak summer storms can hit at any time and ruin even the most carefully planned party. When impending rain threatens to ruin your party, don’t despair, with a few last minute changes and some quick thinking, you can salvage your event and still have a great time! So when the lightning flashes and the rain starts to fall, don’t immediately panic thinking your party has been rained out, just pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get ready for a frenzy of activity that will save the day!
First thing to do when you hear the pitter patter of rain drops is not to panic! If the rain catches you off guard and you’ve already started your party set up, immediately unplug any electronics you’ve got outside and get in as many decorations you can before the downpour starts. Once you’ve got everything back inside, take a minute to regroup and figure out what to do. If you are only expecting a few guests and will have no problem fitting everyone inside your home, then you just need to switch gears and start setting up indoors. But, if you’re expecting a large group and were relying on the outdoor space to hold everyone, you’re going to have to do some fast thinking when you’re party is rained out! If the gods are on your side, it will be a quick summer storm and you’ll be back to sunny skies in no time, but if it looks like the rain is going to stick around for awhile, consider having some of the party outside anyway. If you were planning a pool party, as long as there’s no lightning, why not proceed as planned? After all, your guests are going to get wet anyway and chances are, the kids will love swimming in the rain! Even if you weren’t planning a pool party, a refreshing summer sprinkle doesn’t have to ruin your outdoor party and can even add some extra fun, especially for the younger generation or anyone else who doesn’t mind getting drenched in the rain.
Take a couple extra vinyl tablecloths and secure them on the lawn with stakes. After they’ve had a good soaking in the rain you’ll have a ready-made slip and slide that the guests of all ages will enjoy! Toss a couple beach balls out in the rain and watch how fast a game of volleyball starts! No one will mind the rain, and while your lawn might quickly turn into a mud pit, your guests will be having a great time! And speaking of mud pits, another fun activity that is perfect for a rainy day is Pop the Balloon. Blow up several latex balloons in different colors and toss them into that mud pit that was once your backyard. Set a timer and tell the kids (or the adults!) that whoever can pop the most balloons, without using their hands, wins. Then, start the clock and watch the chaos ensue!
Even if you can have some of your activities outside while it’s raining, you’ll still need to find room for all your food when your party gets rained out. Which most likely means your garage is about to get a quick clean up and a party transformation! Once you’ve moved your cars out onto the street, give it a quick sweep to get the dust and garbage up and push everything you can to the sides. Then, string some twine from one end of the garage to the other and hang a couple of colorful plastic tablecloths from it. Not only will this add a little brightness to your dreary garage, it will also hide all your junk! Move your picnic tables and chairs into the garage to give everyone a place to sit, and, if you’re not putting the food inside, use fabric food covers to keep the bugs and dust out of your munchies.
While having your party moved to the garage might not be exactly what you planned, rain is a fact of life, and everyone who plans a summer party runs the risk of having their party rained out and needs to have a back-up plan. With just a little tweaking and some quick thinking, your party can be salvaged and there’s no need to cancel your event at the first flash of lightning! And if all else fails, just throw on one of our umbrella hats and have fun dancing in the rain!
