The School Season is Almost Here and it's Time to Throw a College Send off Party for the Student in your Family!
August 13, 2012
As summer draws to a close and you get ready to send your child off for college, you’re probably wishing you could keep them home as much as possible so you can soak up those last few days of memories before they’re gone for the semester. But your child probably has other ideas and wants to spend as much time with their friends as possible. So, why not compromise and throw them a college send off party where they can say goodbye to their friends and family, make some memories with you, and stick around the house for the evening spending time with you! Whether you’re sending off your child for their first year at university or you’re an old pro at this end of summer goodbye routine, a college send off party is a great way for everyone to get together for one last hurrah before the summer ends and it’s time to say goodbye as the kids head off to school.
Since everyone gets busy as the summer draws to a close, get your party on the schedule early by sending out personalized invitations with all your party details. Choose preprinted invites that you can customize with all your party details and you’ll save plenty of time on party prep!
You don’t need to go all out and deck the halls for your child’s college send off, as that would probably embarrass them a bit, but you can still set the scene with some fun party decorations. Go with a fun summer theme with luau decorations, fiesta party supplies, or a nautical theme for your party and stock up on basic paper supplies, tableware, and centerpieces to decorate your table with. Or, show some school spirit by decorating with the school colors for your child’s college. A few basic supplies and decorations will set the scene and make your kid feel special when they see you’ve gone through the trouble of decorating for their special night!
Since you can expect lots of kids dropping by throughout the night as your child’s friends say goodbye, you’ll want to have plenty of teen-friendly foods on hand that can be easily replenished as the swarms of teenagers descend like locusts, cleaning out the food stores and eating everything in sight! Traditional favorites like chips and dip, fresh veggie platters, nachos, pizza, brownies, homemade cookies, and cake are always a hit with the younger crowd, but you can also make some more refined alternatives for the older crowd to enjoy. Consider tortilla rollups, bruschetta, shrimp cocktail, mini quiches, tarts, and mini cheesecakes to tickle the palates of all your guests! And for a fun alternative that everyone will enjoy, splurge for chocolate fountain complete with cut up goodies to dip, like sponge cake, pretzel rods, marshmallows, strawberries, pineapple, and bananas. Sure, it might be messy, but it will definitely be a hit with guests of all ages!
If this is your child’s first venture off to college then they will probably be feeling a little sentimental about leaving their friends and family behind, so be prepared for a few tears as they say goodbye. To help make the party more meaningful, take pictures throughout the night of the guests that you can later put into a scrapbook for your child to take to school. You can also purchase a plush autograph bear for the guests to sign with well wishes for the guest of honor. On those nights when your child’s a little homesick in the first weeks of school, the bear will remind them of home and make them feel a little closer to their loved ones and friends!
Sending your kid off to college is an exciting and scary time for both of you, and your efforts to throw big send off party will be appreciated by the friends and loved ones who get one last chance to say goodbye, and your child, who will enjoy seeing everyone in the days before they leave. So cherish the memories that are made and your last days before your bird flies the coop and your left with an empty nest—at least until Christmas break rolls around and everyone descends once more!
