Tips: Chinese New Year 2018 Party Ideas

Tips: Chinese New Year Party Ideas

Chinese New Year (formally, Lunar New Year of the Chinese Spring Festival; or simply called Spring Festival or Lunar New Year in Modern China) is an important Chinese festival celebrating popular themes and Chinese values, such as “good fortune,” “happiness,” “wealth,” and “longevity.”

These festivals span 15 days, during which traditional Chinese cuisine is served, gifts are exchanged, and music and fireworks displays commence, as swarms of people gather in the streets to make merry and express best wishes of hopeful new beginnings and future prosperity in the new year.

Chinese New Year commences February 16th and honors the Year of the Dog. As one of the world’s largest, most prominent and honored festivals, Chinese New Year is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate ancient cultural traditions. Read on for our tips to throw an authentic Chinese New Year party this February.

Decorate with Traditional Chinese Decorations

Based on the Chinese belief that you need to “sweep away bad luck” that may have accumulated over the past year, it’s tradition to clean your home before the official start of the Chinese New Year (afterwards would risk sweeping away good fortune you’ve come into in the new year).

Once your home is its cleanest, it’s time to decorate with traditional items bearing Chinese insignias, such as gold Kanji characters, cherry blossoms, and intricate flowery patterns. Don’t forget to feature the classic Chinese dragon in these decorations, like our Chinese Dragon Wall Decoration, our Chinese Dragon Door Panel, our Chinese Dragon Table Runner, and our Chinese Dragon Whirl Decorations.

Decorate in red and gold colors, which help symbolize power, strength, and good luck! You can express sentiments of good fortune with our Good Luck Lanterns or our Oriental Good Luck Lanterns, and compliment your traditional Chinese decorating theme with our Red Paper Lantern Garlands.

You can also set the scene right with our Chinese scene setters, like our Great Wall of China View Decoration, our Bamboo Scene Setter, our “Happy New Year” Tiger Cutout, or our much-needed Year of the Dog Cutout to commemorate this year’s theme.

Celebrate Togetherness with a Traditional Chinese Feast

Once the scene is set, it’s important to serve up a hearty meal of traditional Chinese cuisine with foods that convey special symbolism including:

  • Jiu, hard liquor, and daikon, the Chinese radish for longevity
  • Red chilies for good luck
  • Rice for harmony
  • Fish, chicken, and other small animals, which are often served whole and cut at the table for unity and prosperity

Enjoy all that deliciously prepared food at a beautifully decorated table. We have ornate centerpieces, including our Chinatown Centerpiece and our Asian Gong Centerpiece; table covers, like our traditional Asian Table Cover, or our more standard red and gold table covers; and metallic fringed red and gold table skirts.

After the table is set, it’s time to serve your guests. Your traditional Chinese feast will taste so good on our colorful and ornate Chinese New Year plates. Don’t forget the chopsticks, the well-known utensil used in China.

Make Sure to Dress to Impress

In traditional Chinese culture, formal attire can help symbolize wealth, good fortune, happiness, joy, and good spirits in the celebrations--especially red-colored clothing! Top off your Chinese New Year getup with any of our traditional Chinese hats, such as our Red Satin Hat, our Red and Gold Mandarin Hat, or our Straw Asian Hat. Ornament your ensemble with our Chinese New Year Bead Necklace, or punch up the vibrant luminance of your outfit’s spirit with our Red LED Beaded Necklace, our Red LED Retro Sunglasses, or light up El Wire sunglasses or slotted sunglasses.

Make Merry: Share Good Times with Your Guests

Above all, Chinese New Year is about celebrating good fortune and sharing it with others, to wish your friends and loved ones plenty of happiness and prosperity in the new year. Make time to play games with your friends or attend your city’s Chinese parade. Hand out our Chinese Good Luck coins as a token of your best wishes to your guests or adorn them with one of our Chinese Saying temporary tattoos; though the tattoos may be temporary, their sentiments will leave a lasting impression on your guests.
