Sweet apple pie for the wedding?

For some couples, a traditional wedding cake just sends the wrong message. Instead, they want pie.
Two bakers told the Chicago Sun Times that more people are asking for wedding pies from them instead of three-tiered cakes.
"I've had four more inquiries [in a month] for wedding pies," Paula Haney said. "One of them wants us to do stacking pies."
Though Haney said some customers want the pies there as an option in addition to a cake, couples like Amanda Lao and Ken Pelletier just want pie.
"It just seemed like a way to make it more fun and informal," Lao told the news provider. "Wedding cakes are beautiful, but pies taste better."
But is it just an effort to be different and stand out? Perhaps not.
Vincent Rossmeier, who described himself as an avid pie lover, told YourTango.com that pies are cheaper than wedding cakes and can incorporate seasonal fruits in their filling such as strawberry and apple.
"Pie is moist where cake is too often arid; it's complex where cake is too often banal," Rossmeier told the website. "Pie offers me lasting contentment, whereas all cake can tender is a cloying sugar rush."
