Make your wedding BYOD: bring your own dress

Best friends rejoice! The days of fluffy pink taffeta bridesmaids dresses might be behind us. A new, welcome trend in weddings for this winter is allowing your bridesmaids to pick their own wedding ensemble, based on your guidelines.
For example, if you chose lavender as your accent color, ask all of your bridesmaids to choose a knee-length purple dress with straps (you can be as specific about length, style, and color as you want.) This allows your wedding party to buy something that they feel comfortable in. It is also a nice move into today's economy - instead of asking your friends to shell out hundreds of dollars on something that they secretly (or not so secretly) hate, they can invest in a dress that they plan on wearing again.
A few more ways to insure that your bridesmaids enjoy themselves (almost) as much as you on your wedding day include picking a color that works well on most of your friends - dark colors like black, navy, forest green and burgundy look great on just about everyone.
Though a group shopping spree might sound like a good idea, it could also be a recipe for drama if your friends have different taste. Consider finding several dress options online and email them out to your bridesmaids.
