Beat the rainy day blues
October 07, 2009
Beautiful fall days afford us plenty of opportunities to enjoy the changing leaves and the last of the warm weather, but being stuck inside during an autumn storm isn't always fun. If you're stumped for ways to entertain kids when the weather turns bad, try out a few new activities to keep them stimulated.
Keep kids out of your hair without parking them in front of the TV - bust boredom by tapping into their creativity. Browse online with your kids to find a painting or picture that they like - it can be anything from a renaissance classic to a picture of their favorite singer. Then, pull out a water color set and have them try to recreate the image. You could even help them out by sketching a few lines to guide them. Offer to display their artwork in their bedroom as extra incentive to keep them focused.
Take advantage of seasonal crafts and activities like pumpkin carving to keep kids occupied. You could also used the time to make a homemade treat, like pumpkin bread or apple pie - have kids help you by measuring the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and stirring up the batter. And don't forget the best part - licking the spoon!
