Go back in time, have a Donny Darko Halloween party
October 20, 2009
It's official. Enough time has passed for Donny Darko, the subculture phenomenon of 2001, to be fresh again. (Not that we ever stopped loving the movie, which stars Jake Gylenhaal and is set in the late '80s).
It's the perfect Halloween movie. The film features changing leaves, an awesome costume party, time travel and an omniscient rabbit. If you want to throw a hip Halloween bash, this is the perfect option.
Advise guests to come as characters from the film, they'll have plenty of options. There's Kitty Farmer, the wind-suit sporting gym teacher, Gretchen Ross, Donny's love interest, Frank the Bunny, a being in a rabbit suit whose motivation is a hot button topic among Darko fans and, of course, Donny himself. Donny heads to his own Halloween party dressed as a skeleton.
Blast the soundtrack, which features great tunes from Tears for Fears, Duran Duran and Joy Division among others.
Make sure to put up some Halloween party decorations, like fake cobwebs and black lights. (You could even make a few smurf decorations as a nod to the infamous couch scene).
For party favors, make your guests t-shirts with your favorite movie quotations printed on them.
