Celebrate national aviation month
November 06, 2009
November marks national aviation history month, and it seems like aeronautic nostalgia is in the air.
Amelia, a biopic starring Hillary Swank as famed-pilot Amelia Earhart has just hit the theatres. Earhart was a fashion plate of her time who brought aviator sunglasses, bomber jackets and hats and big billowy scarves into the mainstream style of the time.
Celebrate the month by hosting an aviator party. Guests can come in a classic Earhart get-up, or get inspired by other famous pilots like Charles Lindbergh (who favored pilot goggles and a shirt and tie under a leather bomber jacket) or take cues from a more modern example and dress like Maverick or Iceman from Top Gun.
The aviator cocktail is a mixed drink that was popular in the 1930's but has fallen off in recent years. Bring it out of retirement in honor of the holiday.
Mix part two parts gin with one part each of fresh lemon juices and maraschino liqueur. Garnish the dish with the maraschino.
Top off the night with an aviation movie marathon. The Aviator or Fly Away Home will make you appreciate the beauty of the open skies.
