Dude you're having an 80s themed birthday party!
November 11, 2010
You were only a kid during the 1980s but you fondly remember the awesome music and interesting fashion choices. For your next birthday prepare to throw on your Ray Bans and hop in a DeLorean because you're going back in time!
It shouldn't be too hard to think about how to create the perfect 80s themed birthday party, especially because it seems that leg-warmers and popped collars keep coming back in style.
The tone will be set with the party invitations you send, so be sure to choose something flashy and very 80s. We're talking bright neon colors and cartoon characters that look straight out of a video game from the era. Think along the lines of Pac-Man and Pong. Tell your friends to come in their best 80s gear too. You want to see people in pastel blazers with rolled up sleeves, piano key neckties, Members Only jackets, leggings, acid washed jeans and denim jackets. Also, big hair and bright eye makeup are encouraged for the ladies.
As far as decorations are concerned, don't be afraid to go with bright colors. The 80s are known for using bright, neon and fluorescent tones on everything. Invest in balloons and streamers that look as if they will glow in the dark. In fact, stock up on glow party favors like necklaces and beads for your guests to wear throughout the evening. They'll even be able to take them home with them when they leave.
Music will play a huge part in your shindig, so make sure you have a varied selection of classic 80s tunes for your friends to jam to all night long. Get your friends to dance on the ceiling with some Lionel Richie and follow it up with some Tiffany and Soft Cell, you don't want their love for the evening to become tainted. If your venue has the space, try and get a dance competitions going. See who can break dance the best, who has the best robot and who can pop and lock like a pro.
If you really want to impress your friends, go all out for with the food, especially your birthday cake. If it's in your budget, find a baker who can create a custom mini DeLorean. Everyone remembers it as the car from Back to the Future, and they'll certainly freak out when they see they can get a piece of it. Keep plenty of paper goods such as napkins, paper plates and party tableware on hand. Everyone is going to be diving right in for a slice of your DeLorean.
You don't want to send your friends home empty handed at the end of the night. So when it comes time to hand out party favors give them something unexpected. Everyone remembers cassette tapes, they were the only way to listen to music before CDs and MP3s became the norm. Give out blank cassettes to your guests and see their faces light up as they reminisce about all of their old tapes from the 80s.
