Esperanza Spalding
You may not have known
that name last night, but most of the internet is abuzz with it
now.
Esperanza
Spalding is a Jazz singer and bass
player who 'upset' Justin Bieber
(among others) for the Best
New Artist award during the 2011 Grammy Awards last
night.
This was such an 'upset'
that the Wikipedia entry on
Spalding
was hacked by angry Bieber
fans. Full
Story.
There doesn't seem to be
any bad blood on Bieber's behalf, but the fans are
outraged.
To her credit,
Esperanza Spalding is
incredibly talented and just as deserving of winning the award
as any of the other nominees.
For the Bieber faithful out
there, I can only say this: No matter how amazingly popular an artist is,
the Grammys
are not likely to reward you. Unlike other music awards where fans can
vote or album sales are key, the Grammys look more at what
any artist did from a creative and or groundbreaking
perspective.
During the 1990's
when Britney Spears,
Christina Aguilera, *NSync, and the Backstreet Boys were
dominating TRL, they did not
dominate the Grammys. These are
awards that look for substance. Not to
take anything away from Justin Bieber, he's very
talented and will continue to be successful, but he's not necessarily doing
anything that hasn't been done before.
