Take Advantage of a Beautiful Summer Night and Setup an Outdoor Movie Party!
July 09, 2012
When you’re looking for a chance to chase away the summer blahs, planning an outdoor movie party is just the ticket to a fun evening with your friends and family! Since drive-in movie theaters are becoming a thing of the past and a trip to the movies for the whole family can make a serious dent in your wallet, why not plan a fun outdoor movie night that you can enjoy with all your friends and neighbors? With just a little planning and the right equipment you can have a great, fun family night everyone will love!
To get started you’ll need to find the right equipment for your outdoor movie night. If you don’t already have a movie projector, or have a friend who can loan you one, you can rent one for the night or check Craig’s List or FreeCycle for used options at a low cost. You’ll also need a DVD player or laptop to play your movie on and speakers you can hook up outside. If you’re not technically savvy, enlist the help of your favorite tech geek with the setup and be sure everything is up and running well ahead of the guests’ arrival time so you don’t have to worry about technical glitches while everyone’s clamoring for the show to start! You can easily create a makeshift movie screen using a king size white bed sheet, or even two white plastic table cloths stapled together. Nail the corners to a narrow piece of wood to ensure they aren’t blowing around during the show and attach your screen to any large flat surface, like your garage, siding, or porch railing. You’ll want to make sure you pick a family friendly movie everyone will enjoy, like an animated favorite or classic film. Or, for something a little different, show a series of animated shorts, classic television shows like “I Love Lucy” or “The Brady Bunch,” or even funny cartoons. Have plenty of options available and let guests vote on the night’s feature film before firing up the projector.
If you don’t have enough lawn chairs for your guests, encourage them to bring their own, or, for a more intimate evening, spread out quilts and cushions on the lawn for guests to sprawl out on. Your guests will little kids will appreciate the option to let the kids spread out and the younger ones may even fall asleep, letting their parents enjoy the show in peace! If you’re expecting any pregnant guests or guests with limited mobility, be sure to reserve seats for them ahead of time.
Since you’ll be setting up your theater outdoors, you can get away with minimal directions, but you’ll still want to set the stage for your outdoor movie party! Have plenty of munchies available for guests to nibble on throughout the show. Set up a buffet table so everyone can help themselves. A popcorn-theme table cover and Hollywood Night paper plates are the perfect choice for your movie night! Pop a big bowl of popcorn that guests can help themselves to, with popcorn cups for them to fill with the tasty treat. Set out an array of tasty seasonings, like ranch, season salt, coco powder, and cheese to let them season their popcorn. Keep the rest of the menu movie themed by serving nachos with cheese and jalapeno peppers, hot dogs, and movie theater sized candy, which can be bought cheap at dollar stores. If you’re worried about the bugs, invest in some fabric food covers to keep your food bug free. Since you’ll want to keep the lights low while to movie is playing, set up some light up balloons by the food table so people can find their way to the treats without tripping over their feet! Weigh them down with one of our popcorn balloon weight and you’ll have the perfect centerpiece for your table!
Once you’ve thrown your first outdoor movie night and mastered the art of setting up and running all the equipment, you’ll love how much fun this is for you, your family and friends and will want to turn this into a frequent event. And when your friends and neighbors realize what a great movie hostess you are, they’ll want you to throw one every week, so you’d better be ready to have your backyard be turned into the local hangout!
