Bring the Spirit of the Olympic Games to your Home by Hosting a Mock Olympic Games for your Children and their Friends!

Once again the Olympic Games have rolled around, getting everyone in the mood for some good old fashioned competition!  Why not bring the younger generation into the act and host an Olympic themed party, complete with Opening Ceremonies, competitions, and medals, for your kids and all their friends?

Welcome everyone to your Olympic games with a custom Olympic banner, which you can personalize with a special message to get your guests in the Olympic spirit!  Add some patriotic satin bunting to the front porch to complete your festive look.

Once all the kids have arrived, separate them into teams.  To eliminate any chance of fighting or anyone feeling left out, divide them into different teams based on color, such as the red, white, blue, and yellow teams, and have them draw colored chips or flags out of a hat to see which team they will be on.  After your teams are determined, let the kids create their own team t-shirts using white t-shirts and fabric paint, as well as a team flag.  Hold a dramatic opening ceremony, in which your teams show their unity by marching together wearing their shirts, carrying their flags and waving to the adoring crowd!  Your neighbors will love watching the parade as it progresses through the neighborhood!

And now that the opening ceremonies are complete, it’s time to move on to the competitions.  You’ll need some help keeping the teams coordinated, safe, and happy, and you’ll need judges, so enlisting the help of other parents is a must!  Determine ahead of time what events you want to have the children compete in.  There’s many ideas to choose from that are simple and fun for everyone.

- Have the teams choreograph a simple gymnastics routine

- Set up an obstacle course using game field cones and other household objects for the kids to navigate their way around on foot, bikes, scooters, or skateboards

- Pair team members off in a three-legged race

- See who can throw a discus, made out of a paper plate, the farthest

- Hold relay races

- Bury a piece of hard candy in a pile of flour.  See who can find the candy the fastest, using only their mouth.

- Water balloon tosses

- Tug o’ war

- Long jump

Your choice of events can be customized to the ages, interests, and number of kids who are attending your Olympic Games party.  Obviously, younger kids won’t have as much coordination as older children, so simpler games are more appropriate.  It’s also important to keep plenty of drinks and nutritious snacks on hand to keep the competitors hydrated and full of energy.  After all, it’s tough being an Olympic athlete!  Stock up on bottles of water, sports drinks, fresh fruit, cheese and cracker packets, and small bags of nuts.

Reward the winners of each event with their own medals, just like in the real Olympics.  Stock up on gold, silver, and bronze award medals to present to the winners.  To add to the Olympic feel, create an awards platform like they use in the real Olympics and present each winner with a floral bouquet as you place the medal around their neck!

Use a white board to keep a running tally of each team’s medal count throughout the day.  As the end of the competition draws near, the heat will be on as the kids try to outdo one another and be part of the winning team!   But remember, the Olympics are about good sportsmanship and camaraderie, not who wins the most medals, so it’s important to keep an eye on the teams and make sure things don’t get out of hand and that no one is getting too competitive.  It might be a good idea to have participation medals or Olympic torch trophies to hand out to everyone who’s participating in your Olympic Games so that no one goes home feeling like a loser.

Sharing the spirit of the Olympics with the younger generation is a great way to teach them the importance of good sportsmanship and team unity.  By holding your own mock Olympics, you can begin to foster a love of sports at an early age as well as an appreciation for the dedication of the Olympic athletes and the pomp and ceremony of the Olympic Games!  Check out all the Olympics party supplies from Windy City Novelties and start planning for the event today!
