For a Fun Fall Day Activity, Plan an Apple Picking Party!
October 11, 2012
When you’re trying to pick a perfect party theme for late summer or early fall, look no further than your nearest apple orchard! Whether it’s for your child’s next birthday party, an afternoon out with the girls, or just a day with your nieces and nephews, apple picking is a fun activity that will keep kids and adults amused and result in a bounty of fresh fruit that will yield plenty of tasty treats!
While your apple picking party is at the mercy of Mother Nature, let your guests know only a raging thunderstorm or a freak blizzard will keep you away from the orchard on the appointed day. Be sure to bundle up if the weather is chilly and be prepared with ponchos, or even fun umbrella hats in case the rain starts to fall! Contact the orchard ahead of time to ensure they have plenty of apples available for picking and to see if they provide all the necessary baskets, how much it costs, and how many apples the cost covers. You can also check if there are other activities at the orchard that your guests might enjoy, if picnic tables are available and if you can bring in food to serve.
There are two options for your apple picking party once you’re done collecting your bounty and have split up the apples and hauled away the harvest. For a simple party plan, bring a picnic to the orchard and enjoy a relaxing afternoon under the apple trees. Sandwiches, chips, cupcakes, and apple juice and cider are easy food options every will enjoy. If the orchard doesn’t have any activities, consider bringing a few outdoor games for the kids to enjoy, like bubbles, beanbag toss, and footballs. After everyone has eaten their fill, send them on their way with their share of apples and a few homemade recipe cards you’ve created featuring recipes for apple-themed dishes, such as applesauce, apple crisp, cider, and of course, your great-grandma’s famous apple pie!
The other option for your apple picking party, which will require a little more planning, has all the guests piling in the car and heading back to your place after the apple picking is over to bake up some delicious apple-themed fun! Have your house decorated before you head to the orchard so that everything is ready before the guests arrive when everyone is done at the orchard. Ruby red latex balloons by the front door will look like juicy red apples when blown up! Add some festive red streamers and paper lanterns and you’ll have a festive party atmosphere your guests will love! Be sure your kitchen is well-stocked ahead of time with all the ingredients you’ll need for your chosen dish. Some delicious options are baking an apple crisp or apple pie, making fresh applesauce, creating caramel apples dipped in various toppings, or making apple butter. For the adults in the group, you can serve up some delicious apple martinis as well!
You’ll want to have some activities planned to keep the younger crowd amused while your goodies are baking. Bobbing for apples, while an obvious choice for an apple themed party, is always a hit. Since you’ll be baking you can also purchase aprons for the cooks-in-training, which can be decorated with fabric paints while you’re waiting for your treats to finish baking.
Once your treats are done baking and cooled, be ready to serve them to your guests on red gingham plates that will match your apple décor and fit in with your apple picnic theme! Your guests will love being able to taste the fruits of their labor and you’ll need to be ready to share your recipes! When it’s time for everyone to head home, wrap up samples of all the treats for everyone to take home, along with their share of the apples and copies of the recipes so they can recreate the culinary masterpieces.
At the end of the day, your apple picking adventures will have yielded some delicious delicacies for all of you to enjoy and wonderful memories everyone will cherish until next year’s harvest is ready to be plucked!
