Does this tree "pop" up or is it assembled some other way? And, is it sturdy enough to hold a few ornaments?

  The foil tree fits into a plastic bottom. As far as ornaments go it really depends on the weight and size. It could hold a few small paper or foil ornaments but not standard size plastic or glass ornaments.
